Overview

Infant Massage is an old age tradition from India. It was passed down from mother to daughter and was brought to the Western world by a woman named Vimala Scneider Mclure in the early 80.s. Her vision was to have every baby on the planet massaged. This vision has been met in Sweden, where every baby gets massaged. It is taught the same all over the world.

It was brought to South Africa in 1998 by Erica Nieuwenhuis who attended an Instructor's course in the UK in 1997. We have about 200 certified instructors countrywide. Margo Kilborn is our own International Trainer in South Africa and we have 6 to 8 trainings a year.

The parents can attend individual/private classes in their own home or come to classes at centres where they will meet other parents. The classes are taught one a week over a five week period and really serve to meet all the social requirements both for parents and babies.

Rates vary from place to place but they are usually around R400 to R500 for the whole course.

The question usually asked is . why would you massage a baby.. Well you would massage a baby for many reasons, the most important would be the bonding aspect. Touch is the first sense that is developed in the womb and if that is continued outside the womb, it enhances brain development, body awareness.

By crossing the midline we help to centre the baby faster. Infant Massage relieves tension, works wonders for the Immune system, digestive system and of course as mentioned the Interaction is certainly improved. The classes are always baby led and we work very closely with baby cues. We teach the parents to ask permission and that in turn teaches respect. If respect is taught and given at an early age it will be carried through to later life.

My dream is that EVERY BABY in AFRICA should be massaged and what a different place Africa would be..
